Post Office Reopens After Four-Month Closure
On Monday, October 17, 2022, the Montpelier Station Post Office reopened, following a four-month closure prompted by the historic exhibition In the Time of Segregation. The Post Office, which has been in existence since 1912, currently serves approximately 100 customers.
When the Post Office was abruptly closed on June 2, the US Postal Service (USPS) gave neither The Montpelier Foundation nor the public any advance notice or opportunity to comment on the closure. On August 9, the USPS finally stated that the reason for closing the Post Office was Montpelier’s exhibition In the Time of Segregation.

During the closure, there was an outpouring of support from community members, as well as local, state, and federal entities, to reopen the facility. The Montpelier Foundation is delighted that USPS has responded to the voices of the community and the Foundation in reopening the Montpelier Station Post Office.
This exhibition is housed separately in the restored 1910 Train Depot and is clearly marked as a museum. The entrances to the exhibition and the post office are on different sides of the building; the two entities do not connect inside. The exhibition was created in 2010 to educate the public about the realities of life under Jim Crow laws and has not changed since then. Montpelier has received only positive comments from the community and peer sites for it. Montpelier is proud of the exhibition and stands by its commitment to telling the complete American story.
